Since beginning his Judicial Career Judge Crawford has instituted several innovative and thoughtful programs in the 18th Circuit including A Special Needs Docket for children in foster care with mental or physical disabilities allowing their case to be reviewed twice as often as previously set. Along with Brevard Family Partnership, he instituted the county’s only supervised visitation program for parents seeking to reunite with their children while involved in a reunification case plan with the Department of Children and Families. With the help of his courtroom deputies and countless volunteers, Judge Crawford maintained a playroom at the Courthouse for children forced to go to court along with a children’s clothing and toy/bicycle room making sure every child that came to court left with a much-needed necessity and a toy. Setting of trials within 90 days of any request, litigants no longer wait a year for trial. General Magistrates and Hearing Officers of Seminole are judicial officers that the Circuit’s Chief Judge appoints to perform certain quasi-judicial duties. - SEMINOLE GENERAL MAGISTRATES are responsible for cases involving: temporary relief (alimony, child support, and attorneys fees and costs in family law cases), contempt of court, support enforcement, mental health (Baker Act), substance abuse (Marchman Act), tuberculosis, sexually transmissible diseases, incapacity, guardianship (including guardian applications, background investigations and annual reports filed with the court), modification of prior rulings, dependency review hearings. As part of the Guardianship Law, General Magistrates assist the Probate Court with guardian application and background checks, and plenary and limited guardianships.
- SEMINOLE HEARING OFFICERS are appointed to hear Family Division cases dealing with family support issues. The Findings and Recommendations entered by the Hearing Officer have the same force and effect as Orders entered by a Circuit Judge.
